PHD – Philosophy of Design – is an architectural bureau founded in 2003 by Lana Grineva. Since its establishment, the bureau has worked with projects of various dimensions and typologies, from small interior design projects to large-scale architectural projects.
PHD has a very unique viewpoint on how interior design should be approached. PHD believes that “we shape our homes and then our homes shape us” – this holistic view of how the environment around us affects us is the stepping stone for all of PHD‘s incredible interior design and architecture projects.

Due to the bureau’s guiding philosophy, all of their projects reflect the way they intend to shape their clients’ life. With a sort of “treat others like you want to be treated” kind of ideology, PHD designs its projects keeping in mind who the client is and how they want to feel in their new environment and delivers a new interior that not only meets but also surpasses expectations – this stands true for both residential projects and otherwise.
This might explain why PHD prioritizes comfort in their residential projects, as it is that same feeling of comfort and liberty that you should feel when you’re home, otherwise it just feels like a house. Furthermore, as PHD themselves state, “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury“, and with that in mind, PHD manages to create extremely luxurious and sumptuously comfortable interiors.

PHD‘s interiors typically follow a modern aesthetic with contemporary furniture pieces. The colour palette is usually one of neutral shades, ranging from beiges to greys, making the room catch your eye in a subtle way. At times you’ll find that PHD opts for monochromatic rooms, not accentuating the room with pops of colour as is usually the case, but with art pieces and textiles, which makes the rooms feel warmer and more cohesive.
However, don’t doubt PHD‘s ability to play with colour, as they have created some stunning vibrant interiors, the bureau knows exactly how much colour to incorporate in order to create a dashing interior without making it look overbearing or tacky in any way, shape or form.
It is this combination of outstanding visual appeal with the soothing and warming aspect of their design – granted by luscious contemporary upholstered pieces, astonishing light fixtures and, our favourite, stunning fireplaces – that makes PHD stand out among other top interior designers.
